Volunteer

Volunteering at Seniors Outreach & Resource Centre is a rewarding way to be actively involved in your community, while also helping older adults stay connected and engaged.

Volunteers receive training and on-going support for their role, a quarterly newsletter, and an invitation to our annual volunteer appreciation event.

Volunteer Opportunities

Safe Seniors, Strong Communities: Covid-19 Response

With the current pandemic, many seniors are not able to be as independent as they previously were. Our Safe Seniors Strong Communities program is dedicated to offering essential, non-contact services to help seniors. These services include:

  • Grocery Shopping and Delivery- our staff completes orders with clients online, and arrange for volunteers to pick up completed orders and drop them off at the client's home.
  • Prepared meal delivery- volunteers deliver frozen meals to seniors who are not well enough to cook, to ensure they stay fed while staying isolated.
  • Virtual visits- this is an easy, flexible position where we match a volunteer with a senior who is needing social contact. This may also entail having a FaceTime/Zoom/Skype call, should the seniors be able to do so.
  • Prescription Delivery- a volunteer picks up pre-paid medications and delivers them to the client’s home

Friendly Visitor

A volunteer is matched with an individual older adult for a weekly visit. Activities may include having coffee together and talking, a social outing, or going for a walk.

**Due to Covid-19, all in-person visits have been temporarily replaced by phone/virtual visits.

Computer Mentors for Eldernet

*Due to COVID-19 this program has been suspended temporally

Volunteers help older adults learn how to use various technology, such as a computer, iPad, or smart phone. Basic skills are taught on an individual basis and can cover using the internet, writing a document, learning how to print and more.

Coffee Break Host

*Due to COVID-19 this program has been suspended temporally

These volunteers host a weekly, free coffee time when older adults can drop in and meet other people. Coffee break hosts greet newcomers to the group and actively engage people in conversation. Relief Hosts are also needed on an occasional basis when the weekly hosts are away.

Income Tax Preparation Volunteer

*Due to COVID-19 this program has been suspended temporally

Trained volunteers assist low-income older adults with simple income tax returns.

Handyperson

Volunteers assist with minor home repairs for an older adult with limited income on a case-by-case basis.
